Gerald N. Stevens

Feb. 5, 1942 - Aug. 19, 2014

Port St. Lucie, Fla. - Gerald Norton Stevens, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. (formerly of Winsted, CT), passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 19,2014 after a corageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

He was the loving husband of Clarice N. Stevens and son of Kenneth C. and Ruth B. Stevens. He was predeceassed by his sister, Carol Lohr and brother Clifton Stevens.

Gerry was born in New Haven, Conn. on Feb. 5, 1942, lived his childhood in Hamden, Conn. and was a Connecticut resident before moving to Florida in 1996. He graduated from Hamden High School and earned a bachelor's of science degreefrom the University of Connecticut in 1964.

He was also commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force upon graduation. Gerry and Clare were married in 1965 and moved to Florida and California during the four years he served in the U. S. Air Force. Gerry earned a masters degree from Rollins College in Fla. in 1968 and attained the rank of captain at the time of his honorable discharge in 1969.

Returning to Connecticut, Gerry involved himself in many service organizations, including being on the board of directors of the Dixwell Comunity House, treasurer of the Cheshire Community Theater and Cheshire Jaycees.

He became a certified public accountant and worked at Ernst and Ernst, International Silver Co. and Emhart Corp. where he was the director of employee benefit services.

After moving to New Hartford, Conn. Gerry served on the board of directors of the Winsted Memorial Hospital, as a corporator of the Northwest YMCA and chaired the New Hartford Pension Committee.

Gerry and Clare both sang with the Litchfield County Choral Union for 35 years. When Emhart Corp. was purchased by Black and Decker, Gerry was employed as a consultant for the rest of his life.

After moving to Port St. Lucie, Gerry and Clare sang with the St. Lucie Chorale and the Treasure Coast Classical Chorus. Gerry also served on the Ballantrae Board of Finance, treasurer of the Ballantrae Board of Directors and treasurer treasurer of the Angler's Club. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, and bridge player.

He is survived by his wife Clarice, nephews Peter Nichols, Thomas Nichols, Kenneth Hutchins and Scott Myers, along with a number of great-nieces and -nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 8, 2014 at the North Stuart Baptist Church, Stuart, Fla.
